Today's office environments place more and more emphasis on collaboration as their guiding principle -- doing away with the idea of splitting up teams into their own compartmentalized areas and encouraging a cross fertilization of ideas instead. When setting the brief for its new premises in Shanghai, Envision asked for a specific control room within the office for its engineers dealing with problems in the field. Travel video about destination Shanghai. Shanghai is a gigantic city that is a meeting point of both east and west. The shoreline is without a doubt the city's main focal point. The city is a combination of the past, present and future and contains the historic monuments and eye-catching buildings of a great metropolis. It was once referred to as 'The Whore of Asia', 'Capital of Crime', 'the Paris of the East' and 'The Centre of Maoism'. But today, the city is ruled by modern-thinking communists and the Yangzi Delta is not only China's largest port but also its new shining star of capitalism. The Oriental Pearl Tower is a mighty 468 metre high television tower that contains an entertainment centre, futuristic luxury hotel, fine restaurant and offers the most superb views across the city. ...

Shanghai - China Travel Guide, Tourism, Vacation World Travel https://www.youtube.com/user/World1Tube Shanghai - China Travel Guide http://goo.gl/Cl0qNG Shanghai is the future all other Chinese cities aspire to reach. Forget creaking temples and dusty old palaces (there are plenty of them elsewhere); Shanghai is where people come to see modern China at its glimmering best. This fast-paced city of towering skyscrapers is, in fact, not without its own significant history. Its glory days of the 1930s helped build Shanghai's reputation as a City of Sin. But to pause for too long at the city's past would be missing the point: Shanghai is all about the future face of the world's future super power, and coming here is to witness what makes the business end of China tick. Join the Freeman Chair in China Studies on September 27th for a lively and frank discussion about the state of American business in China featuring a top-notch line-up of American business executives operating on the front lines in China. American trade and investment ties with China have grown dramatically over the past three decades, often to the benefit of the United States. Moreover, American companies have had a positive effect on China’s economy and been a voice for economic reform and liberalization. That said, there is a growing concern that American industry, workers, and consumers are no longer benefitting from these ties, and that as a result, the United States must take more dramatic measures to rebalance the relationship. Keynote Description: Today, the library is in the exploratory phase of transition from the old paradigm to a new one, but there is no mature model to follow. Dr. Wu Jianzhong attempts to find out the central issue in this changing environment and apply it to the whole process of library operation. In Dr. WU's opinion, this central issue is people-orientation. Only when a library is people-oriented and demand-driven, can it advances with the times and adapt to the changing environment. Starting from the three elements of people, resources and space, he will lay great stress on people in the whole library operation. He will take the Shanghai Library as an example to show how the library is surviving in this exploratory phase of transition. Wu Jianzhong is Director of Shanghai Library, Shang...
September 19, 2012. Shanghai, China. As a building's height increases, the required amount of structural material to resist lateral loads increases drastically due to the "premium for height." This presentation investigates optimal configurations and comparative efficiency between today's prevalent structural systems for tall buildings of various forms to meet design requirements with less structural materials, thus saving limited resources and creating a more sustainable built environment.

September 21, 2012. Shanghai, China. This presentation examines a ground-breaking environmental load-reducing demolition system recently developed for high-rise buildings, labeled the TECOREP system (Taisei ECOlogical REProduction system). The system works top-to-bottom, floor-by-floor and was implemented in 2011 to demolish a 105-meter office-building in Otemachi, Tokyo. The system was developed with specific consideration given to security and safety, the global environment, and the reduction of cost and time.
Prosperity or health – does one have to choose? With massive industrialization and urbanization, China’s environment pays a heavy price. China’s most recent annual environmental report notes that three quarters of Chinese cities cannot meet the nation’s air quality standards, while the water quality of 60 percent of monitored groundwater wells is either “bad” or “very bad.” Ma Jun, this year’s Dr. Scholl Foundation Visiting Fellow and China’s foremost environmentalist, has been exposing these concerns for decades. An innovator, he has pioneered ways to share pollution data with the public and cooperate with international businesses – all while striving to bridge the gap between the government and the public. With the world turning to China for affordable and clean energy leadership, Ma wil...
Fantasies and Fears: Reading Eco-City Development in Shanghai December 2, 2009 This lecture investigates environmental justice and environmental inequality; environmental culture and politics; race, gender and power; and community health and activism in Shanghai. September 21, 2012. Shanghai, China. This presentation analyzes and contrasts traditional 2D design and construction to the possibilities provided by Building Information Modeling. BIM technology represents a significant step forward in comparison to traditional design (especially in terms of high-rise steel structure buildings with complex shapes). It not only breaks the shackles of long-standing restrictions on architectural form and space creation, but also closes the collaboration gap between design and construction.
